Antique 1874 Hidden Compartment Mourning Hair Ring
Beautiful, gorgeously engraved and detailed mourning ring with buckle motif. Band is hand engraved and accented by black enamel on the front buckle. Inside the band is inscribed Mothers Hair 1874.
Tightly clasped shut, there is a hidden compartment of hair under the front buckle with a hinge on the reverse of the band. The hair underneath is a blonde color, tightly braided and in good condition for age. It does not show at all when buckle is closed and has to be accessed by prying up one side of the buckle with a finger nail.
Created in 9k gold and unmarked apart from inscription, this ring is a beautiful example of love and sentimentality. Band measures 4.3 - 8.6mm with the widest being the buckle at the front. Size is approx a 6, however, due to the width, fits a bit tighter. Is not sizable.
There is enamel loss on the front side of the buckle. Engraving is around the entire band in a flourish/leaf pattern.
