Antique Early Victorian Sterling Vinaigrette by George Unite

Stunning example of a vinaigrette from approx 1830s-1840s. Stamped GU for George Unite, the date letter is a bit hard to decipher but likely 1840s although the GU stamp could be 1830s George Unite.

The front panel is detailed with engraved flowers and vines and initials EW in the center. The reverse has a leaf or fern type engraving. Interior is fully hallmarked, including duty mark in both the lid and on the base. There is a "door" with floral cut out details that lifts and allows the wearer to insert items, flowers, gemstones or other sentimental pieces, although it originally would have had smelling salts or piece of scented wool.

Vinaigrettes were used to help cover some of the smells in Georgian-Victorian eras where populated cities would have strong odors. This particular piece would have likely been worn around the neck and looked like a locket when closed.

Total weight is 8.47g. Measures approx 32 x 19 x 8mm (not including the removable jump ring). A more modern sterling chain can be included upon request.
